Maria called us last winter completely fed up with her master bathroom shower. They’d had tile installed four years earlier by a general contractor who claimed he “did tile all the time.” The grout was stained and moldy. Water was leaking into the wall cavity. And the tile itself was starting to come loose in spots.

We came out to assess and honestly, it was worse than she described. The installer had tiled directly over drywall with no waterproofing membrane. Used regular thinset instead of modified for the wet area. Didn’t slope the shower pan properly so water pooled in corners. It was a textbook example of how not to do tile work.

Here’s what we had to do. Ripped everything out down to the studs. Found water damage in the framing that needed repair first. Installed a proper shower pan system with the right slope for drainage. Added cement board and a waterproof membrane behind all the tile. Used large-format porcelain tile that Maria loved but that requires more skill to install without lippage.

We also redesigned the layout slightly. Created a shampoo niche at the right height. Added a bench that was properly waterproofed and tiled. Made sure all the cuts and pattern work looked intentional instead of random.

Installation took about a week because we did it right. Maria sent us photos six months later – the grout still looked brand new, no staining, no mold, everything still perfectly level and sealed. She said taking a shower finally felt relaxing instead of stressful wondering when the next problem would show up.
