Custom Closet Islands in Houston, TX

A drawer-filled island in the middle of your walk-in closet, sized so doors open, people pass and folding has a proper surface.

Custom closet islands put drawer storage and a folding surface in the middle of a walk-in closet, where floor space usually goes unused. A typical island holds folded clothes, jewelry, watches, belts and accessories, with a top for laying out outfits or packing a suitcase. Ace Kustoms builds them in our Houston shop from furniture-grade plywood and hardwood, then installs and levels them on site.

Fitting an island depends on clearance more than anything. We want at least 36 inches on every side, and 42 inches where drawers face hanging clothes or a dresser, so drawers open fully while someone stands in front of them. A closet needs to be roughly 10 by 10 feet or larger before an island makes sense, and we will tell you honestly if yours is better served by wall storage.

An island works best as part of a full closet plan, with hanging, shoe and shelf storage on the walls around it. If you are starting from wire shelving, our custom closet solutions page covers the wall systems we build. Islands can also be added later to an existing closet if the clearances work and the finish can be matched.

Why choose Ace Kustoms for custom closet islands

Drawer storage without wall space

An island adds anywhere from 6 to 16 drawers in floor space that was otherwise empty. That frees the walls for long hanging, double hang and shoe shelves, which need vertical room an island cannot use.

A real folding surface

A 24 to 30-inch deep top at counter height gives you somewhere to fold laundry, set out tomorrow's clothes or pack for a trip, instead of spreading everything across the bed.

Organized jewelry and accessories

Shallow top drawers with velvet or felt-lined dividers hold rings, earrings, watches and cufflinks. Deeper ones take sweaters, jeans and workout clothes without stacking them three high. Nothing gets crushed or tangled.

Hidden hampers and valet rods

Pull-out hamper bins, a pull-out ironing board or a fold-down valet rod can be built into the island ends. They keep laundry and pressing tasks contained without extra furniture in the room.

Seating and charging

A seating overhang, a bench end or a built-in charging drawer with an outlet supplied through the floor or a nearby wall can make the closet work as a dressing room.

Built to match your closet

We match the island's finish, door style and hardware to the surrounding wall cabinetry, so the closet reads as one built-in instead of a dresser placed in the middle of the room.

Styles, materials and options

Drawer bank island

Drawers on both long sides with full-extension soft-close slides. A common size is 48 to 72 inches long and 36 to 44 inches deep for back-to-back drawer storage. Smaller islands can put drawers on one side only.

Display-top island

A glass top over shallow, lined drawers lets you see watches, jewelry or sunglasses at a glance. Tempered glass with a hardwood frame keeps dust off and protects contents. The glass panel lifts or slides for access.

Seating island

An island with a cushioned bench at one end or a 10 to 12-inch countertop overhang for a stool. Good for putting on shoes or sitting while you get ready.

Laundry island

Tilt-out or pull-out hampers sorted by darks and lights, a folding top and drawers for socks and undergarments. Useful when the laundry room is far from the primary suite. Bins lift out for carrying to the washer.

Countertop choices

Solid hardwood, quartz, solid surface or a painted plywood top with a hardwood edge. Quartz and solid surface resist scratches from hangers, belts and jewelry clasps. Hardwood tops can be refinished later if they wear.

Painted or stained finishes

Paint-grade maple suits white and soft gray closets. Stain-grade white oak, walnut and rift-sawn oak show grain and pair with warmer closet designs and brass or bronze hardware. We finish all of it in our shop.

Our process

  1. Measure clearances. We measure the closet, door swings, light locations and HVAC vents, and tape the proposed island on the floor so you can walk around it before committing to any size.
  2. Plan drawer contents. We go through what will live in each drawer: jewelry, folded tops, denim, accessories. Drawer heights are set by contents, from 3-inch jewelry trays to 10-inch sweater drawers.
  3. Choose finishes and top. With real samples, you pick wood or paint, door profile, pulls, countertop material and any glass. We check how they look beside existing closet systems and lighting.
  4. Build in our Houston shop. The island is built as one or two modules from plywood with dovetailed drawer boxes, finished in the shop and sized to fit through your doorways and hall turns.
  5. Install, level and anchor. We set the island on a level base, anchor it to the floor to prevent tipping, connect any outlet, install the top and adjust every drawer for even reveals.

What affects the cost

  • Island size and the number of drawers are the main factors, since every drawer adds slides, a box and a front.
  • Stain-grade hardwoods and glass display tops cost more than paint-grade maple and solid tops.
  • Specialty inserts like velvet jewelry trays, hamper pull-outs and valet rods add hardware cost.
  • Countertop choice matters, with quartz and solid surface generally above wood or painted tops.
  • Adding an outlet in the island usually means routing power through a slab floor, which adds electrical cost.

For general planning, a custom closet island in Greater Houston often runs around $3,500 to $8,000 for a mid-size drawer island, and $9,000 to $15,000 or more for larger islands with glass tops, specialty inserts and stone counters. These are rough ranges that depend on size, materials and site conditions. We provide a written estimate after measuring your closet.

Built for Houston conditions

Closets in Houston homes are often on exterior walls or under hot attic space, and humidity can make drawers swell and stick if cabinetry is not sealed. We finish all sides of drawer boxes and island panels and use plywood rather than particleboard so the island stays stable. Walk-in closets on slab foundations rarely have flat floors, so the island sits on a leveled base before anchoring. Adding an outlet in the island usually means coring the slab, so we discuss charging options early. Keep closet doors open or vented when possible so the AC reaches the space and clothes stay dry.

Custom Closet Islands FAQs

How big does my closet need to be for an island?
As a rule of thumb, a closet around 10 by 10 feet or larger can fit a small island with 36 inches of clearance on each side. Larger islands need more. We tape out the island on your floor during the visit so you can walk around it and judge the space yourself.
Does the island need to be anchored?
Yes. Even a heavy island can tip when several loaded drawers are open on one side. We anchor the base to the floor with concealed fasteners. On slab floors this means drilling into concrete, and we take care around any in-floor plumbing or wiring.
Can you add an outlet to my closet island?
It is possible but takes planning. Power usually has to come up through the slab or from a nearby wall via a concealed floor channel. Your licensed electrician handles the wiring. Many homeowners choose a charging drawer near a wall outlet instead to avoid cutting concrete.
What drawer slides do you use?
We use full-extension, soft-close undermount slides rated for the drawer's load, typically 75 to 100 pounds for clothing drawers. Undermount slides hide under the drawer box, so you do not see metal hardware when the drawer is open. Each drawer also gets adjusted on site for even gaps.
Can an island be added to my existing closet system?
Usually yes, if the clearances work. We match door style, paint or stain and hardware to your current closet so the island looks like it belongs. If the existing system is a wire or laminate kit, we may suggest updating the walls as well for a consistent look.
What top is best for a closet island?
Quartz and solid surface handle scratches and are easy to wipe down. Hardwood tops are warm and can be refinished. A glass top over a display drawer protects jewelry and lets you see it. The choice usually comes down to how you will use the surface.
