Custom Trim & Millwork Installation in Houston, TX

Crown, baseboard, casing, wainscoting and ceiling details installed with tight joints by finish carpenters who build in-house.

Custom trim and millwork installation is what makes a room look finished. Builder-grade homes often come with 3-inch baseboard, thin casing and no crown at all, while older homes may have original molding that has been damaged or removed over the years. Ace Kustoms installs crown molding, baseboard, casing, wainscoting, board and batten, beams and coffered ceilings with our own finish carpentry crew, and we mill custom profiles in our Houston shop when needed.

Good trim work depends on scale and joinery. A 9-foot ceiling can carry a 5 to 7-inch crown, while an 8-foot ceiling looks better with something smaller. Baseboard of 5-1/4 to 7-1/4 inches suits most modern rooms. We cope inside corners on crown and base rather than relying on caulk-filled miters, glue and pin outside miters, and scribe trim to wavy walls and floors so gaps do not open up later.

Trim often goes together with interior and exterior door installations and with built-in cabinetry, which we design to tie into your moldings. We also install the skirt boards and trim around staircases. A free in-home estimate lets us look at ceiling height, existing profiles and wall conditions, and show you real trim samples so you can judge scale in the actual room.

Why choose Ace Kustoms for custom trim & millwork installation

Coped and tight joints

We cope inside corners on crown and baseboard so joints stay tight as the house moves with the seasons. Outside miters are glued and pinned. The result is trim with fine lines that do not open up after the first humid summer.

Proportioned to the room

Trim size should match ceiling height and room size. We help you choose crown, base and casing that work together, avoiding thin trim that looks lost in a tall room or heavy crown that crowds a low ceiling.

Matched or custom profiles

We can match existing profiles in older homes, either from stock or by milling a custom profile in our shop. That lets you repair or extend original trim without a visible change from room to room.

Scribed to real walls

Walls and floors are rarely flat. We scribe baseboard to floors and crown to ceilings, and use backer blocks or flexible profiles where needed so the finished trim follows the room cleanly with minimal caulk.

Paint-ready finish

Nail holes are filled, joints are caulked with flexible paintable sealant and surfaces are sanded and primed as needed. Trim is left ready for paint, or we coordinate painting so the room is completely finished.

Built and installed in-house

Our own crew handles custom millwork from shop to installation. Beams, coffers and wainscot panels are built in our Houston shop, then installed and fitted by the same carpenters who made them.

Styles, materials and options

Crown molding

Single-piece crown from 3-1/2 to 7 inches, or built-up crown with multiple pieces for taller ceilings. Crown can be painted to match walls or trim, and can include LED lighting for a soft cove glow at the ceiling.

Baseboard and shoe

Baseboard from 5-1/4 to 9 inches in flat, ogee, Craftsman or colonial profiles, with optional shoe molding to cover gaps at the floor. Taller baseboard is a common upgrade from builder-grade 3-inch base.

Door and window casing

Craftsman casing with a head cap, classic colonial casing, or modern flat stock. Casing upgrades are often paired with new doors or windows, and we can add stools and aprons to window openings.

Wainscoting and paneling

Raised-panel or flat-panel wainscoting, beadboard and picture-frame molding, typically 32 to 42 inches high in dining rooms, halls and bathrooms. Taller paneling up to 60 inches suits rooms with high ceilings.

Board and batten and accent walls

Board and batten, grid paneling, shiplap and slat walls create texture on accent walls, entries and stair walls. We lay out spacing so battens land evenly on each wall and around outlets and switches.

Beams and coffered ceilings

Box beams and coffered ceilings add depth to living rooms, dining rooms and offices. Hollow box beams are built in our shop, mounted to blocking in the ceiling and finished painted or stained.

Our process

  1. Consultation and measure. We measure each room, note ceiling heights, wall conditions and existing trim profiles, and discuss the look you want. We bring samples so you can compare sizes in the room.
  2. Design and selection. You choose profiles, materials and finish. For wainscoting, accent walls or ceilings, we provide drawn layouts showing spacing and how details meet doors, windows and outlets.
  3. Shop preparation. We mill custom profiles if needed, build beams, coffers or panels in our shop, and prime trim stock so installation and final painting go smoothly.
  4. Installation. Our crew removes old trim if needed, installs blocking, then cuts, copes, scribes and fastens each piece. Joints are glued and pinned, and outlets are extended where trim depth changes.
  5. Finishing and walkthrough. Nail holes are filled, joints caulked and trim sanded and primed or painted as planned. We walk each room with you and handle any punch list items before finishing.

What affects the cost

  • Total linear footage of trim and the number of rooms set the base scope.
  • Larger and built-up profiles, especially multi-piece crown, take more material and labor.
  • Material choice matters, with paint-grade MDF and poplar costing less than stain-grade oak or walnut.
  • Wainscoting, coffered ceilings and beams require shop fabrication and more installation time.
  • Removing old trim, wall repair, matching custom profiles and painting add to the total.

As a general planning range, installed crown molding in Greater Houston often runs about $8 to $25 per linear foot, baseboard about $5 to $15 per linear foot, and wainscoting or board and batten roughly $25 to $60 per linear foot of wall. Coffered ceilings and beams are priced per project. Get a written estimate based on your rooms and materials.

Built for Houston conditions

Houston's humidity makes wood trim swell and shrink through the year, which is why poorly installed miters open up after the first summer. We cope inside joints, glue outside miters and use flexible sealants that move with the wood. Paint-grade MDF is stable in dry rooms but should be avoided in bathrooms, laundry rooms and near exterior doors, where we use poplar, finger-jointed pine or PVC trim. Slab floors in older homes are often uneven, so we scribe baseboard rather than relying on shoe molding alone. Exterior walls in older ranch homes may be out of plumb, which affects crown fit, so we use flexible blocking and careful scribing.

Custom Trim & Millwork Installation FAQs

What size crown molding should I use?
A common guideline is about 3-1/2 to 5 inches of crown for 8-foot ceilings, 5 to 7 inches for 9-foot ceilings and larger or built-up crown for 10 feet and above. Room size and style also matter. We bring samples so you can see the scale in your room before deciding.
Should I use MDF or wood trim?
Paint-grade MDF is affordable, smooth and stable in dry rooms, but it can swell if it gets wet. Poplar and finger-jointed pine are good paint-grade wood choices for areas with moisture. Stain-grade trim in oak or walnut is used when you want visible wood grain.
Can you match my existing trim?
Usually, yes. Many common profiles are still available. For older or unusual profiles, we can mill a custom match in our shop. Matching trim lets you repair damaged sections or extend trim into remodeled areas without a visible change. We bring a sample piece to confirm the match.
How do you prevent gaps in trim joints?
We cope inside corners instead of mitering them, glue and pin outside miters, scribe trim to walls and floors and use flexible sealants. Acclimating the trim in your home before installation also helps reduce shrinkage and seasonal gaps. Fasteners go into framing, not just drywall.
Can coffered ceilings be added to an existing room?
Yes. We install blocking into the ceiling framing, then mount shop-built beams and add trim to create the coffered grid. We plan around light fixtures, vents and smoke detectors. Ceiling height matters, and coffers work best with 9 feet or more.
How long does trim installation take?
Crown and baseboard for a typical room take about a day. Whole-house trim upgrades can take one to two weeks. Wainscoting, coffered ceilings and beams take longer due to shop fabrication. Call (281) 660-3903 to schedule your free in-home estimate. Painting is scheduled separately if needed.
