Custom Fireplace Surrounds & Mantels in Houston, TX

Hardwood mantels, paneled surrounds and flanking built-ins designed around your firebox and the clearances it requires.

A custom fireplace surround and mantel gives the room's main feature the trim it deserves. Many Houston fireplaces still wear a dated brick face, a thin builder mantel or nothing more than a tile border. Ace Kustoms builds new wood surrounds, mantel shelves, paneled overmantels and flanking cabinets in our Houston shop, then installs them with the same crew that built them.

Every fireplace project starts with clearances. Wood is combustible, so mantels and trim must stay a safe distance from the firebox opening. Masonry fireplaces generally follow code rules that limit how close wood can be and how far it can project near the opening, while factory-built and gas units follow the clearances in the manufacturer's installation manual. We confirm those numbers before we draw anything.

A new surround often goes hand in hand with other custom trim installations such as crown molding, wainscoting and beams. It can also anchor a media wall with built-in cabinets on each side. Whether the look is a simple Shaker mantel, a traditional paneled overmantel or a clean modern slab, the woodwork should fit the scale of the room and the age of the house.

Why choose Ace Kustoms for custom fireplace surrounds & mantels

Clearances planned from the start

We check the fireplace type, verify required distances to combustible materials and design the mantel height and trim depth to meet them. That avoids the costly mistake of a beautiful mantel that has to come down.

Proportions that fit the room

Mantel height, shelf depth and surround width are set to the scale of the wall and ceiling. An 8-foot ranch living room needs a different mantel than a two-story family room with a 20-foot wall.

Updates without demolition

In many cases a new wood surround can be built over an existing brick or tile face, with non-combustible material kept around the opening. That updates the look without tearing out masonry.

Room for a TV or art

We can build an overmantel panel with blocking for a TV mount, a recessed niche for a frame-style TV, or a picture light for art. Wiring routes are planned behind the panel.

Storage on either side

Flanking built-ins hold firewood, media equipment, books or display pieces. They balance the fireplace and turn the whole wall into one cohesive design instead of separate parts. Doors keep clutter out of view.

Solid hardwood construction

Mantel shelves are built from solid or laminated hardwood, not hollow foam or veneered particleboard. They can carry real weight like books, candles and seasonal decorations without sagging over time.

Styles, materials and options

Shaker or craftsman mantel

Flat pilasters, a simple frieze board and a thick shelf. Clean, versatile and a good match for many Houston homes from 1940s bungalows to newer transitional builds. Works in both paint and stain finishes.

Traditional paneled surround

Raised or recessed panels, fluted pilasters, dentil molding and a crown-capped shelf. Often extended into a full overmantel to the ceiling in rooms with formal trim. Best suited to rooms with taller ceilings and existing crown.

Floating mantel shelf

A solid hardwood beam-style shelf, 6 to 10 inches thick, mounted on a hidden steel bracket anchored into studs or masonry. Common in modern and farmhouse rooms with stone or tile faces.

Full-height overmantel

Paneled, shiplap or flat millwork that runs from the mantel to the ceiling, sometimes with a TV niche or display shelving. Adds height and makes the fireplace the clear focal point.

Flanking built-ins

Base cabinets with open or glass upper shelves on one or both sides. Lower cabinets can hide media components, log storage or games, with wiring routed through the wall. Upper shelves can be lit.

Wood species and finishes

Paint-grade poplar or maple for painted surrounds, and stain-grade white oak, walnut, cherry or reclaimed-look finishes for natural wood mantels. Heat-resistant finishes are used near the opening. All faces are sealed in our shop.

Our process

  1. Inspect the fireplace. We identify the fireplace type, whether masonry, factory-built or gas insert, and note the model if available. We measure the opening, hearth, wall and existing face material.
  2. Confirm clearances. We check required distances to combustibles from code guidance or the manufacturer's manual, and note any non-combustible facing needed around the opening before designing the mantel.
  3. Design and select finishes. You review a drawing with mantel height, profiles and any flanking cabinets, then choose wood, paint or stain and trim details from real samples. Nothing is built until you approve.
  4. Build in our shop. We build the mantel, surround and built-ins in our Houston shop, finishing them before delivery. Mantel shelves are assembled as solid or laminated hardwood pieces.
  5. Install and finish trim. We install the surround, anchor the mantel into framing or masonry, scribe to the wall and hearth, and connect it with surrounding trim. A final walkthrough checks every joint.

What affects the cost

  • The scale of the surround, especially full-height overmantels, sets most of the cost.
  • Stain-grade hardwoods like walnut or white oak cost more than paint-grade poplar or maple.
  • Detailed profiles such as fluted pilasters, dentil and carved elements add shop time.
  • Removing or covering existing brick, stone or tile adds demolition, masonry or tile work.
  • Flanking built-ins, TV blocking and wiring add cabinetry, electrical and installation work.

As a general planning range, a custom mantel shelf or simple surround in Greater Houston often lands around $1,500 to $4,500, while a full paneled overmantel with flanking built-ins can run $8,000 to $20,000 or more. Masonry, tile or electrical work adds to that. These are planning figures that vary by size and materials, so ask us for a written estimate.

Built for Houston conditions

Many Houston homes from the 1970s through the 2000s have factory-built fireplaces with metal fireboxes, and their clearances come from the manufacturer's manual, which is sometimes missing. We look for the data plate inside the firebox to identify the model. Older 1950s and 1960s masonry fireplaces may have settled with the slab, leaving uneven hearths and faces that require careful scribing. Fireplaces on exterior walls see temperature and humidity swings, so we finish mantels on all sides. Many Houston fireplaces are used only a few times a year, but clearances still apply every time the fireplace is lit.

Custom Fireplace Surrounds & Mantels FAQs

How close can a wood mantel be to the fireplace opening?
It depends on the fireplace type. Masonry fireplaces generally follow building code rules that limit how close combustible trim can be and how far it projects near the opening. Factory-built and gas fireplaces follow their manufacturer's installation manual. We confirm the specific requirements for your fireplace before designing anything.
Can you build a surround over existing brick?
Often yes. We can build a wood surround that frames the existing brick, or cover the brick with a new face and trim, while keeping non-combustible material around the firebox opening. We check that the brick is sound and that the new work meets clearance requirements.
Can I mount a TV above my fireplace?
Many homeowners do. Heat rising from the fireplace can affect electronics, so the mantel depth and TV height matter, and the TV manufacturer's guidance should be checked. We can build blocking into an overmantel for a secure mount and plan concealed wiring routes.
What if I do not have the manual for my fireplace?
Most factory-built fireplaces have a data plate inside the firebox or behind the lower grille listing the manufacturer and model. With that information the manual can often be found. If not, we take a conservative approach to clearances and recommend having a fireplace professional inspect the unit.
Can a floating mantel shelf hold heavy decorations?
A solid hardwood floating mantel on a steel bracket anchored into studs or masonry holds a good amount of weight, including books, candles and garland. We size the bracket and fasteners to the mantel length and your plans for it.
Do you handle stone or tile around the fireplace?
We coordinate the full fireplace wall. Tile and stone facing can be handled as part of our tile and stone work, while the mantel and woodwork are built in our shop. Planning both together ensures the materials meet cleanly and the clearances are right.
