Montgomery County · Trim, Doors & Stairs
Homeowners in The Woodlands often want a mantel that fits the scale of their room and the style of their home. Ace Kustoms builds them across Montgomery County.
The Woodlands is a large planned community north of Houston along I-45, mostly in Montgomery County with a small portion in Harris County. It was laid out around preserved forest, with villages separated by greenbelts, trails and lakes. Market Street and The Woodlands Waterway form its town center.
Many Woodlands homes were built in the 1980s and 1990s under tall pines, with oak cabinets, soffits and traditional trim now ready for replacement. Newer villages have larger, open homes. Common work includes full kitchen remodels, soffit removal with ceiling-height uppers, paneled studies, two-story fireplace walls and outdoor kitchens on screened or covered patios.
In smaller The Woodlands homes and condos, a large fireplace surround can overwhelm the room. A slim floating shelf, a low-profile Shaker surround or a simple painted overmantel adds detail without visual bulk. We size the woodwork to the wall and ceiling height so it suits the space, and we keep the design simple so the fireplace still feels balanced. Less is often more here.
Every project starts with an in-home measurement in The Woodlands. We build in our Houston shop and the same crew handles installation, so the person you talk to at the estimate is accountable for the result. Learn more about our full custom fireplace surrounds & mantels service.
Flanking built-ins hold firewood, media equipment, books or display pieces. They balance the fireplace and turn the whole wall into one cohesive design instead of separate parts. Doors keep clutter out of view.
Mantel shelves are built from solid or laminated hardwood, not hollow foam or veneered particleboard. They can carry real weight like books, candles and seasonal decorations without sagging over time.
We check the fireplace type, verify required distances to combustible materials and design the mantel height and trim depth to meet them. That avoids the costly mistake of a beautiful mantel that has to come down.
Mantel height, shelf depth and surround width are set to the scale of the wall and ceiling. An 8-foot ranch living room needs a different mantel than a two-story family room with a 20-foot wall.

Many Houston homes from the 1970s through the 2000s have factory-built fireplaces with metal fireboxes, and their clearances come from the manufacturer's manual, which is sometimes missing. We look for the data plate inside the firebox to identify the model. Older 1950s and 1960s masonry fireplaces may have settled with the slab, leaving uneven hearths and faces that require careful scribing. Fireplaces on exterior walls see temperature and humidity swings, so we finish mantels on all sides. Many Houston fireplaces are used only a few times a year, but clearances still apply every time the fireplace is lit.
Shade from the pines keeps some homes cooler but can trap moisture, and humidity remains a factor year-round. We build boxes from plywood and choose stable door constructions. For lake homes, we plan finishes for damp air and for rooms where doors are opened often. Garage and outdoor cabinets get materials and finishes meant for heat swings, and for homes near the San Jacinto River or Spring Creek we can discuss raised bases.
As a general planning range, a custom mantel shelf or simple surround in Greater Houston often lands around $1,500 to $4,500, while a full paneled overmantel with flanking built-ins can run $8,000 to $20,000 or more. Masonry, tile or electrical work adds to that. These are planning figures that vary by size and materials, so ask us for a written estimate.
