Custom Shelving in Houston, TX

Floating shelves, bookcases and pantry shelving built from real wood, sized for the load and anchored to stay put.

Custom shelving sounds simple until a shelf starts to sag under books or a floating shelf tips away from the wall. Good shelving depends on the right thickness for the span, solid support into framing, and a finish that holds up. Ace Kustoms builds custom shelving in our Houston shop from solid hardwood and furniture-grade plywood, and installs it with our own crew so it is anchored properly and level from end to end.

We build shelving for every room: floating shelves in kitchens and living rooms, built-in bookcases, pantry shelving, laundry and garage shelves, and display shelving with lighting. Each project starts with what goes on the shelves. A row of cookbooks or dishes weighs far more than decor, so we choose thickness, depth and support method based on the load and the span rather than looks alone.

For full built-in units with cabinets and doors, see our custom cabinetry and built-ins. For whole-house organization, including pantries and garages, see our custom storage solutions. A free in-home estimate lets us locate studs, check wall construction and measure the space, then recommend a shelving approach that will look right and hold what you plan to put on it. No shelf is too small to plan well.

Why choose Ace Kustoms for custom shelving

No sagging shelves

We size shelf thickness to the span and load. For books, a 3/4-inch plywood shelf with a hardwood edge is good up to about 32 to 36 inches; longer spans get thicker stock, a hidden steel bar or a mid support.

Floating shelves that stay level

Our floating shelves mount on concealed steel rods or a hardwood cleat lagged into studs, not drywall anchors. A properly mounted 10-inch-deep floating shelf can carry stacked dishes in a kitchen without drooping at the front edge.

Solid wood options

Shelves can be solid walnut, white oak, maple or cherry for a natural look, or paint-grade wood for a crisp painted finish. We seal all sides so shelves resist warping in Houston humidity.

Built to the space

Custom shelving fits wall to wall, around windows, under stairs and in alcoves where store-bought units leave gaps. We scribe to uneven walls so shelves sit tight without visible shims or gaps.

Integrated lighting

LED strips routed into the underside of shelves or recessed in uprights light displays and work surfaces. Wiring is hidden in the shelving or wall, and a licensed electrician handles any new connections.

Installed by the builders

The same crew that builds your shelves installs them, locating studs and blocking, leveling across the full run and adjusting for wall irregularities. Nothing is left for you to assemble or patch.

Styles, materials and options

Floating shelves

Floating shelves from 1-1/2 to 3 inches thick and 8 to 12 inches deep work well in kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms. Solid hardwood or veneered hollow-core construction keeps weight manageable while looking substantial.

Built-in bookcases

Bookcases with adjustable or fixed shelves around 12 inches deep, built into alcoves or along walls. Face frames, crown and base trim tie them into the room, and lighting can highlight collections.

Pantry shelving

Walk-in pantry shelves at varied depths, 12 inches for cans and jars and 16 to 20 inches for small appliances, with lips to keep items from sliding. Wood shelving replaces sagging wire and stays easy to clean.

Laundry and utility shelving

Sturdy shelves above washers and dryers or in utility rooms, built from sealed plywood with hardwood edges to handle detergent bottles, cleaning supplies and humidity from the dryer. A hanging rod can be added below.

Display shelving

Glass or wood shelves with lighting for collections, art, trophies or dishware. We can add plate grooves, picture ledges or lit backs, and build them into cabinets or freestanding on a wall.

Garage shelving

Heavy-duty shelving for bins, tools and sports gear built from thick plywood on solid supports anchored to studs. We size bays for standard storage bins so everything fits neatly and stacks safely.

Our process

  1. Consultation and measure. We measure the space, locate studs and check wall construction, and talk about what the shelves will hold and how you want them to look. Load and span shape the design.
  2. Design and samples. You choose wood species, thickness, finish and mounting style from real samples. We confirm shelf spacing, depth and any lighting or trim details before fabrication.
  3. Shop fabrication. We cut, mill and finish the shelves and any supports or uprights in our Houston shop, sealing all faces so the wood stays flat in humid weather.
  4. Installation. Our crew installs mounting hardware or cleats into studs or added blocking, sets and levels the shelves, scribes to walls and adds trim or lighting as planned.
  5. Walkthrough. We check that every shelf is level and secure, adjust shelf pins where needed, explain weight limits and finish care, and complete any punch list items.

What affects the cost

  • The total linear footage and number of shelves set the base cost.
  • Solid hardwood, especially walnut or white oak, costs more than paint-grade wood.
  • Floating shelves with concealed steel mounting take more labor than shelves on visible supports.
  • Integrated lighting, glass shelves and specialty trim add materials and labor.
  • Opening walls to add blocking for heavy floating shelves increases site work.

As a general planning range, custom floating shelves in Greater Houston often run about $250 to $600 per shelf installed, depending on length, wood and mounting, while built-in bookcases and pantry shelving commonly run $300 to $900 per linear foot. Pricing varies by size, materials and site conditions, so please get a written estimate.

Built for Houston conditions

Solid wood shelves move with Houston's humidity, so we seal every surface, not just the top, to keep them from cupping or twisting. On exterior walls in older homes, we leave a small gap behind shelving to allow airflow and reduce condensation risk. Floating shelves need solid backing, and many Houston homes have metal corner beads, plumbing or wiring in exterior walls, so we scan before drilling. In homes with brick or masonry interior walls, often found around fireplaces in older ranch houses, we use masonry anchors rated for the load. Garage shelving should be raised off the slab, since garages here can flood briefly during heavy storms.

Custom Shelving FAQs

How much weight can a floating shelf hold?
It depends on depth, thickness and how it is mounted. A properly built 10-inch-deep floating shelf on steel rods lagged into studs can hold dishes and books without sagging. Shelves mounted only into drywall cannot. We explain the realistic load for your shelf during design.
How deep should bookshelves be?
Most books fit on 10 to 12-inch-deep shelves. Larger art books and binders may need 14 inches. Deeper shelves are useful for baskets and media but can make books disappear at the back. We size depth to what you plan to store.
Can floating shelves go on tile backsplash?
Yes, but it requires careful drilling through tile with diamond bits and anchoring into studs or blocking behind. Ideally, we install mounting hardware before the tile goes up during a remodel. On existing tile, we take care to avoid cracking.
Why do shelves sag, and how do you prevent it?
Shelves sag when the span is too long for the thickness and load. We keep spans short, use thicker stock or add a hardwood edge or hidden steel reinforcement. Plywood resists sag far better than particleboard, which bends permanently over time.
Can you add lighting to shelves?
Yes. LED strips can be routed into the underside of shelves or into uprights, with hidden wiring and a switch or dimmer. Any new electrical connections are completed by a licensed electrician. Lighting works especially well for display and kitchen shelving.
How long does a shelving project take?
Simple floating shelves can be built and installed in two to four weeks. Larger built-in bookcases or pantry shelving take three to six weeks. Installation usually takes a day or two. Call (281) 660-3903 to set up your free in-home estimate.
