Custom Laundry & Mudroom Combos in Houston, TX

One room that handles the drop zone and the laundry, with lockers by the door, a folding counter by the machines and storage for both.

A custom laundry and mudroom combo makes one room do two jobs. In many Houston homes, the laundry room is also the door from the garage, so shoes, backpacks, keys and dog leashes pile up next to the washer and dryer. Ace Kustoms designs combined rooms that separate those zones clearly, then builds the cabinets in our Houston shop and installs them with our own crew.

Layout is everything in a combo room. We usually put the drop zone, with lockers, a bench and hooks, nearest the entry door, and the laundry zone, with machines, a folding counter and hanging rod, farther in. A walkway of at least 36 inches stays clear between them, and we plan for washer and dryer doors to swing fully open without hitting a bench or a person sitting on it.

Because both functions share one room, storage has to work hard. Tall cabinets reach the ceiling, uppers over the machines hold detergent and cleaning supplies, and lockers hold daily gear. For more on each half, see our pages on custom laundry room cabinets and mudroom solutions. Here we focus on making them work side by side without either feeling squeezed.

Why choose Ace Kustoms for custom laundry & mudroom combos

Two zones, one room

A clear drop zone by the door and a laundry zone by the machines keep muddy shoes and clean towels apart. Each zone gets the storage it needs, and traffic flows through without blocking anyone doing laundry.

Clutter stays out of the house

Shoes, backpacks, sports gear and coats are stopped at the door, in lockers or cubbies. The rest of the house stays cleaner, and kids have a clear place to drop things when they come home.

A real folding counter

A countertop over front-load machines or alongside them gives you a place to fold, sort and pre-treat stains. It also doubles as a landing spot for groceries coming in from the garage.

Hanging and drying space

A rod for hanging shirts straight from the dryer, a pull-out drying rack or a hanging bar over a sink keeps delicates and sweaters from going in the dryer. Air-dried items stay out of bedrooms and bathrooms.

Room for pets

A dog bed nook under a bench, a leash and harness hook station, a pull-out food bin and a wash-down area can all fit into the mudroom side, keeping pet supplies together and out of the kitchen.

Tough, cleanable surfaces

Sealed plywood cabinets, durable painted or laminate finishes and stone, quartz or laminate counters stand up to wet shoes, spilled detergent and constant traffic better than particleboard kit cabinets. Edges are sealed.

Styles, materials and options

Locker wall with bench

Open or door-front lockers 15 to 18 inches wide each, with hooks, an upper shelf and a bench below with shoe cubbies or drawers. One locker per family member is a common starting point.

Machines under a counter

Front-load washer and dryer side by side under a continuous countertop, with uppers above and a pull-out for detergent between or beside them. Counter height usually lands around 36 to 38 inches.

Stacked machines with tall storage

A stacked washer and dryer in a tall cabinet surround, with a broom closet and shelves next to it. This frees up wall space for a longer locker run or bench.

Utility sink station

A deep laundry sink with a pull-down faucet set in a base cabinet, useful for hand-washing, rinsing muddy cleats or bathing a small dog. Works best near existing plumbing on slab foundations.

Pet zone

A bench with an open bay for a dog bed, a pull-out food drawer, hooks for leashes and a small cabinet for grooming supplies. Some homeowners add a raised dog wash basin.

Finish choices

Painted cabinets in white, soft gray, green or navy are common, often with wood bench tops or butcher block counters. Durable finishes and hardware like matte black or brass suit heavy daily use.

Our process

  1. Map traffic and machines. We measure the room, note door swings, machine sizes, plumbing, dryer vent and electrical, and look at how people come and go from the garage or yard.
  2. Zone the room. You review a layout separating the drop zone and laundry zone, with storage for each family member, a folding surface, hanging space and any pet or sink station.
  3. Select materials. You choose cabinet finish, counter material, bench top and hardware from real samples. We recommend finishes and hardware that hold up to water, detergent and heavy use.
  4. Build and finish in the shop. We build lockers, benches and cabinets from plywood and hardwood in our Houston shop, sealing every surface before delivery so they resist moisture from day one.
  5. Install and coordinate. The crew installs cabinets around machines and doors, coordinates countertop and plumbing work, and checks clearances for machine doors, dryer venting and the walkway before the final walkthrough.

What affects the cost

  • Room size and the total length of cabinetry are the main cost drivers.
  • Lockers with doors cost more than open cubbies and hooks.
  • Adding or moving a sink brings plumbing work, especially on slab foundations.
  • Countertop choice, from laminate to quartz or butcher block, changes the total.
  • Moving machines, rerouting a dryer vent or adding outlets increases trade costs.

For general planning, a combined laundry and mudroom in Greater Houston often runs around $8,000 to $18,000 for cabinetry, benches and counters, while larger rooms with a sink, pet station and full-height storage can range from $20,000 to $35,000 or more. Plumbing and electrical vary. These are planning ranges only, so get a written estimate after we measure.

Built for Houston conditions

Houston laundry rooms deal with dryer heat, washer moisture and outside humidity coming in with every trip from the garage. We use sealed plywood, keep cabinets off the floor near machines where possible and use finishes that resist moisture. Dryer vents should take the shortest route outside, and we never box them in tightly. On slab foundations, moving machines or adding a sink means cutting concrete, so we place them near existing plumbing when we can. Wet shoes and rain gear dry better in open cubbies with airflow than in closed lockers, which can trap moisture and odors.

Custom Laundry & Mudroom Combos FAQs

How big does a room need to be for a laundry and mudroom combo?
A room around 8 by 10 feet can fit side-by-side machines with a counter and a short bench with hooks. Larger rooms allow full locker walls, tall storage and a sink. We measure and show you what fits, including clearances for machine doors and walkways.
Should lockers have doors or be open?
Open lockers are easier for kids and allow wet gear to dry. Doors hide clutter but can trap moisture. Many families choose open lockers with a closed upper cabinet for seasonal items. We can also use ventilated doors as a middle ground.
Can cabinets go above a washer and dryer?
Yes. Upper cabinets above machines typically sit at least 18 to 24 inches above the machine tops, leaving room to load top-loading washers or reach controls. We check your machine specifications and keep space for venting and service access. Shelves inside stay adjustable.
Can I add a sink to my laundry and mudroom?
Often yes, if plumbing is nearby. Laundry rooms already have water supply and a drain for the washer, which can sometimes be shared for a sink. On slab foundations, longer drain runs mean cutting concrete. We coordinate with your plumber during planning.
What counter works best in a laundry room?
Quartz and laminate resist water and detergent and are easy to clean. Butcher block looks warm but needs sealing and care near water. Solid surface is another durable option. The choice often depends on how much folding and wet work happens there.
Can you build around my existing machines?
Yes. We measure your current washer and dryer and plan openings with extra clearance in case you replace them later. If you plan to buy new machines soon, it is best to choose them first so the cabinets fit their exact dimensions.
