Custom Murphy Bed Cabinets in Houston, TX

A real bed that folds into a cabinet wall, so a home office, craft room or den can host guests without giving up the floor.

Custom Murphy bed cabinets let one room do two jobs. During the week, the room is an office, craft room or den with a clean cabinet wall. When guests arrive, the bed folds down in seconds onto a real mattress. Ace Kustoms builds the cabinet, side units and fronts in our Houston shop around a commercially made lift mechanism, then installs and anchors the whole wall with our own crew.

The mechanism matters as much as the woodwork. We use spring or piston lift hardware from established wall-bed hardware makers, sized for the mattress weight and bed size. A queen vertical bed typically needs an opening around 65 inches wide and 88 inches tall, and the cabinet projects about 16 to 18 inches from the wall when closed. Mattress thickness is usually limited to 10 to 12 inches.

Murphy beds work well alongside other built-ins. Flanking cabinets can hold bedding, a wardrobe section can hang guest clothes, and a desk or shelf can stay level when the bed comes down. If the room is mainly an office, see our custom home office built-ins. Either way, the bed face is finished to look like a set of cabinet doors, not a piece of hotel furniture.

Why choose Ace Kustoms for custom murphy bed cabinets

A guest room without a guest room

The room stays an office, gym or playroom most of the year and becomes a comfortable bedroom when needed. Guests sleep on a real mattress instead of a sofa bed or air mattress.

Floor space back every day

A queen bed takes roughly 35 square feet of floor. Folded away, that space is available for a desk, exercise equipment, craft tables or play. Small rooms feel much larger with the bed closed.

Safe, balanced lift

Commercially made spring or piston mechanisms are matched to the mattress weight so the bed lifts and lowers smoothly with one hand. The cabinet is anchored to wall studs and often to the floor.

Storage around the bed

Side cabinets, wardrobe sections, drawers and overhead bridge cabinets hold bedding, pillows and guest items. The wall stores everything a guest needs so nothing ends up in a hall closet.

Looks like cabinetry

The bed face is built as doors or panels that match the rest of the wall, with pulls, profiles and finishes chosen to fit the room. Closed, most visitors will not know a bed is there.

Built to last

Plywood cabinet boxes, hardwood face frames and solid bed frames stand up to repeated use far better than flat-pack wall beds built from particleboard, which can loosen at the mechanism mounts over time.

Styles, materials and options

Vertical Murphy bed

The bed folds down from the head end, like a traditional wall bed. Works for full, queen and king sizes and needs more ceiling height, generally at least 8 feet for a queen.

Horizontal Murphy bed

The bed folds down from the side, so the cabinet is wider and shorter. Good for twin or full beds, rooms with low ceilings, under windows or in kids' rooms and smaller offices.

Murphy bed with desk

A desk or shelf on the bed face that stays level as the bed lowers, so you do not have to clear the desk first. Works best with light items like a laptop or books.

Side cabinets and wardrobes

Flanking units with shelves, drawers or hanging rods, often running to the ceiling with a bridge cabinet above the bed. Provides bedding storage and closet space for guests. Lighting can be added.

Sofa or bench integration

Some designs place a bench or small sofa in front of the bed that slides or folds out of the way when the bed is lowered. Useful in dens, studios or offices.

Finishes and fronts

Painted Shaker doors, flat slab panels in walnut or white oak, or raised panels to match traditional trim. Hardware and lighting are chosen to suit both the closed and open bed.

Our process

  1. Measure room and mattress. We measure ceiling height, wall width, door and window locations, outlets and the clearance needed for the bed to open. We discuss mattress size, thickness and weight.
  2. Choose mechanism and layout. We select a lift mechanism matched to the bed size and mattress, then design the cabinet wall with side storage, desk or shelving and lighting.
  3. Select finishes. You choose door style, wood or paint, hardware and any lighting from real samples, keeping in mind how the wall will look closed and open.
  4. Build in our Houston shop. We build the cabinet, bed frame, side units and fronts from plywood and hardwood, finishing everything before delivery. The mechanism is pre-fitted to confirm alignment.
  5. Install, anchor and balance. The crew installs and anchors the cabinet to studs and floor, mounts the mechanism, adjusts tension for the mattress and shows you how to operate and maintain it.

What affects the cost

  • Bed size and the lift mechanism chosen set a significant part of the cost.
  • Side cabinets, wardrobes and bridge cabinets add materials and labor.
  • Desk faces, sofas or specialty features add hardware and complexity.
  • Stain-grade hardwoods and detailed door styles cost more than painted slab fronts.
  • Integrated lighting, outlets or USB ports add electrical work.

For general planning, a custom Murphy bed cabinet in Greater Houston often runs around $5,000 to $9,000 for a full or queen bed with a simple face, and $10,000 to $20,000 or more with side cabinets, a desk or a full wall of storage. Mattress not included. These ranges vary with size and materials, so ask for a written estimate.

Built for Houston conditions

Murphy beds in Houston often go into spare bedrooms or offices on exterior walls or over garages, where heat and humidity can affect wood and mattresses. We seal cabinet surfaces, leave a small air gap at exterior walls and recommend breathable mattress covers. Slab floors may be uneven, so the cabinet sits on a leveled base and is anchored securely. In older 1950s to 1970s homes with plaster or lath walls, we locate studs carefully and may add blocking to support the mechanism. Closed beds limit airflow, so lowering the bed occasionally helps the mattress stay fresh.

Custom Murphy Bed Cabinets FAQs

Are Murphy beds safe?
When built with a quality mechanism, properly sized to the mattress and anchored to wall studs and the floor, Murphy beds are safe. Most problems come from cheap kits or poor anchoring. We follow the mechanism maker's instructions and test the bed before we leave.
Can I use my own mattress?
Often yes, if it fits within the mechanism's size, thickness and weight limits. Most wall beds work with mattresses 10 to 12 inches thick. Heavy hybrid or memory foam mattresses may need a stronger mechanism. We check before finalizing the design.
How much ceiling height do I need?
A vertical queen Murphy bed typically needs at least 8 feet of ceiling height. Horizontal beds need less height but more wall width. We measure your room and recommend the orientation that fits best. Baseboard and crown may need to be notched or removed where the cabinet meets the wall.
Can a Murphy bed have a desk?
Yes. Some mechanisms support a desk or shelf on the bed face that stays level as the bed lowers. These are best for lighter items like laptops and books. We help choose a mechanism and design that matches how you plan to use the desk.
Is a Murphy bed comfortable?
A well-built Murphy bed with a good mattress is as comfortable as a regular bed. The frame supports the mattress fully, and the mechanism keeps it stable. Many guests do not realize it is a wall bed until it is folded away.
How do I maintain a Murphy bed?
Check mounting bolts and hardware occasionally, keep the mechanism clean and follow the manufacturer's maintenance guidance. Lowering the bed now and then lets the mattress breathe. If tension needs adjustment over time, we can help. Most need very little care.
