Custom Home Office Cabinetry in Houston, TX

Whole-room home offices with built-in desks, file drawers and storage walls, designed around how you actually work.

Custom home office cabinetry turns a spare bedroom, study or loft into a room built for work. Instead of a freestanding desk, a rolling file cabinet and a bookcase that do not match, a full office built-in gives you a desk surface at the right height, drawers sized for hanging files, closed storage for printers and supplies, and shelves for books and binders. Ace Kustoms designs and builds office cabinetry in our Houston shop and installs it with our own crew.

We plan the office around your work. Desk height is usually 29 to 30 inches for typing, with at least 24 inches of knee width per person and 24 to 30 inches of depth for a monitor. File drawers need 24 inches of depth for letter or legal hanging files. We also plan for power, data and cable management so laptops, monitors and chargers do not create a tangle under the desk.

This page covers whole-room offices. For a smaller desk nook or study area built into another room, see our home office built-ins. For kids' study spaces, we also build homework stations. A free in-home estimate starts with measuring the room and talking through how you work, what you store, and whether one or two people will share the space. Bring a list of your equipment.

Why choose Ace Kustoms for custom home office cabinetry

Ergonomic desk layout

We set desk height, depth and knee clearance to fit you, with room for one or more monitors at a comfortable distance. Keyboard trays and adjustable shelves can be added, and standing desk bases can be built into the layout.

Real file storage

File drawers built for letter or legal hanging folders run on full-extension slides rated for heavy loads, so drawers open all the way even when full. Locking drawers are available for sensitive paperwork and records.

Hidden equipment

Printers, shredders, routers and paper supplies can live in ventilated cabinets with pull-out shelves. Closed doors keep the office looking clean on video calls while still giving quick access to the equipment.

Cable management

Grommets, wire chases and recessed power or USB outlets keep cords off the desktop and floor. We plan routes from wall outlets to each workstation before building, so everything has a clean path.

Storage walls for books and binders

Floor-to-ceiling shelving or cabinets around the desk hold books, reference materials and binders. Shelves are 3/4-inch plywood with hardwood edges or thicker, and spans are kept short enough to prevent sagging.

Built to last

Plywood boxes, solid hardwood faces and durable finishes handle daily use. The desk surface can be hardwood, laminate, solid surface or quartz, chosen for how you work and how much wear it will see.

Styles, materials and options

Wall-length desk

A continuous desk along one wall with file drawers and cabinets below and shelves or cabinets above. This layout suits most spare bedrooms and works for one or two people side by side.

L-shaped and U-shaped layouts

Corner desks with a return give more surface for a second monitor, paperwork or a printer. U-shaped layouts surround the user with storage and suit offices where documents and references are spread out.

Two-person offices

Shared offices can have two workstations along one wall or facing walls, each with its own file drawers and storage. We plan acoustics and lighting so two people can work and take calls.

Library and study walls

Full-height bookcases with a rolling library ladder, glass-front cabinets for collections, and a reading chair nook create a traditional study. Stained oak, walnut or cherry suit this classic look. Integrated lighting finishes the look.

Video-call backdrops

A built-in behind your chair with open shelves, lighting and closed storage creates a tidy, professional background for calls. We plan shelf lighting so faces are well lit and the background stays uncluttered.

Desk surfaces

Choose solid hardwood for warmth, high-pressure laminate for durability, solid surface or quartz for a seamless look. We recommend a surface that handles chairs, elbows and coffee mugs well. Edges can be eased or square.

Our process

  1. Consultation and measure. We measure the room, locate outlets, data jacks, windows and vents, and talk about your work, equipment, files and how many people use the office. We note natural light and screen glare.
  2. Design and samples. You review a drawn layout with elevations and choose wood species, finish, desk surface and hardware from real samples. We confirm desk heights, drawer sizes and cable routes.
  3. Shop fabrication. We build and finish the desks, file drawers, cabinets and shelving in our Houston shop, drilling grommets and cutting wire chases before finishing. Everything is finished indoors.
  4. Installation. Our crew sets and levels the cabinets, anchors them to studs, scribes to walls, installs the desk surface and trim, and coordinates any electrical or data work with licensed trades.
  5. Walkthrough. We test drawers, doors and outlets, confirm cable paths, adjust shelves to your needs and walk through the finished office with you, completing any punch list items.

What affects the cost

  • Overall linear footage of desk and storage sets the base scope.
  • File drawers, closed cabinets and locking hardware cost more than open shelving.
  • Desk surface material, from hardwood or laminate to quartz, affects price.
  • Wood species and finish choice affect material and labor.
  • Electrical, data and lighting work add trade costs, as does removing or patching existing walls.

As a general planning range, a custom home office with a wall-length desk, file drawers and upper storage in Greater Houston often runs about $6,000 to $15,000, while larger offices with full storage walls, multiple workstations or library shelving can run $15,000 to $30,000 or more. Costs vary with size, materials and site conditions, so get a written estimate.

Built for Houston conditions

Many Houston home offices are converted spare bedrooms on exterior walls, where afternoon sun and summer heat can make the room noticeably warmer than the rest of the house. We plan desk placement to reduce screen glare and can add ventilation for equipment cabinets. Humidity affects paper storage, so closed cabinets with good airflow help prevent musty files. Older homes from the 1950s to 1970s may have few outlets and two-prong wiring, so we recommend a licensed electrician evaluate power needs before the cabinetry is built. Storm-related power surges are common in the area, so we plan accessible spots for surge protection and a small battery backup.

Custom Home Office Cabinetry FAQs

What is the right desk height?
Most people type comfortably at a desk height of 29 to 30 inches, paired with an adjustable chair. Taller users may prefer 30 to 31 inches. A keyboard tray can lower the typing surface. We discuss your height and chair during design and can build in a sit-stand desk base.
Can you build file drawers for hanging folders?
Yes. We build drawers sized for letter or legal hanging files, usually about 24 inches deep, with full-extension slides rated for heavy loads. Hanging rails are built in, and locking drawers can be added for sensitive documents. Pencil drawers and supply dividers can be added above them.
How do you handle cables and power?
We drill grommets in the desktop, add wire chases behind cabinets and can recess power and USB outlets into the desk or cabinets. New outlets or circuits are installed by a licensed electrician, and we plan the routes before building.
Can two people share a custom office?
Yes. We often design two workstations along one wall or on facing walls, each with its own file drawers and storage. We consider sound and lighting so both people can take calls and work comfortably without disturbing each other. Separate lighting controls help too.
What desk surface do you recommend?
Hardwood looks warm and can be refinished but shows scratches. High-pressure laminate is very durable and affordable. Solid surface and quartz are smooth and easy to clean. We help you choose based on how you work and how much wear the surface will see.
How long does a home office project take?
Most offices take four to eight weeks from approved design to install, depending on size and finish. Installation usually takes two to four days. Call (281) 660-3903 to book a free in-home estimate and talk through your space. Bring a list of your equipment.
