Harris County · Trim, Doors & Stairs
Fireplace woodwork has to look right and meet clearance requirements. Our crew handles both for Bellaire homeowners and others in Harris County.
Bellaire is a small city fully surrounded by Houston, southwest of the 610 Loop near the Galleria and Meyerland. It has its own city government and building rules, quiet residential streets and easy access to the Texas Medical Center. We work here regularly on both original homes and newer rebuilds.
Bellaire's original 1950s and 1960s ranch homes have largely been replaced by two-story new construction, but plenty remain. Older houses need full kitchen layouts and updated baths, while newer homes often want better closets, built-in offices and upgraded trim. Some streets have flooded in past storms, so raised bases in lower cabinets come up in conversation.
Humidity in Bellaire affects wood mantels, especially on exterior walls where temperature and moisture swing with the weather. Wood that is not sealed on every side can cup or crack. We build mantels from stable, laminated hardwood or properly dried solid stock and finish all faces, so the mantel stays flat and the joints stay tight through Gulf Coast humidity.
Every project starts with an in-home measurement in Bellaire. We build in our Houston shop and the same crew handles installation, so the person you talk to at the estimate is accountable for the result. Learn more about our full custom fireplace surrounds & mantels service.
We can build an overmantel panel with blocking for a TV mount, a recessed niche for a frame-style TV, or a picture light for art. Wiring routes are planned behind the panel.
Flanking built-ins hold firewood, media equipment, books or display pieces. They balance the fireplace and turn the whole wall into one cohesive design instead of separate parts. Doors keep clutter out of view.
Mantel shelves are built from solid or laminated hardwood, not hollow foam or veneered particleboard. They can carry real weight like books, candles and seasonal decorations without sagging over time.
We check the fireplace type, verify required distances to combustible materials and design the mantel height and trim depth to meet them. That avoids the costly mistake of a beautiful mantel that has to come down.

Many Houston homes from the 1970s through the 2000s have factory-built fireplaces with metal fireboxes, and their clearances come from the manufacturer's manual, which is sometimes missing. We look for the data plate inside the firebox to identify the model. Older 1950s and 1960s masonry fireplaces may have settled with the slab, leaving uneven hearths and faces that require careful scribing. Fireplaces on exterior walls see temperature and humidity swings, so we finish mantels on all sides. Many Houston fireplaces are used only a few times a year, but clearances still apply every time the fireplace is lit.
Houston humidity is the main thing we design around. Solid wood moves with the seasons, so we use furniture-grade plywood for cabinet boxes and shelves, and frame-and-panel doors that let panels float. Sink bases get extra finish protection, and in neighborhoods along bayous or in flood-prone zones we can raise toe kicks or use moisture-resistant materials on the lowest components. Keeping the house conditioned during installation helps everything settle in properly.
As a general planning range, a custom mantel shelf or simple surround in Greater Houston often lands around $1,500 to $4,500, while a full paneled overmantel with flanking built-ins can run $8,000 to $20,000 or more. Masonry, tile or electrical work adds to that. These are planning figures that vary by size and materials, so ask us for a written estimate.
