Harris County · Trim, Doors & Stairs
In Harris County, fireplace updates range from a single floating shelf to a full paneled wall with built-ins. Here is how we approach them in Pasadena.
Pasadena is one of the larger cities in Harris County, southeast of Houston along SH 225 and the Ship Channel. Its southern side reaches toward Clear Lake and Armand Bayou. It has a strong working-family character and a wide range of neighborhoods built over many decades.
Pasadena's north side has many postwar homes from the 1940s through 1960s, while south Pasadena has larger subdivisions from the 1970s and 1980s. Older homes commonly need full kitchen replacements, updated vanities and new interior doors and trim. Newer areas see pantry additions, garage cabinets and builder-grade upgrades in kitchens that have held up poorly.
A well-built fireplace surround is one of the first things buyers in Pasadena see when they walk into a living room. Classic profiles, quality hardwood and a balanced design make a strong impression in photos and showings. Choosing timeless styles keeps the fireplace appealing for future owners, even if paint colors and furniture change many times over the years. It is a lasting upgrade.
Every project starts with an in-home measurement in Pasadena. We build in our Houston shop and the same crew handles installation, so the person you talk to at the estimate is accountable for the result. Learn more about our full custom fireplace surrounds & mantels service.
In many cases a new wood surround can be built over an existing brick or tile face, with non-combustible material kept around the opening. That updates the look without tearing out masonry.
We can build an overmantel panel with blocking for a TV mount, a recessed niche for a frame-style TV, or a picture light for art. Wiring routes are planned behind the panel.
Flanking built-ins hold firewood, media equipment, books or display pieces. They balance the fireplace and turn the whole wall into one cohesive design instead of separate parts. Doors keep clutter out of view.
Mantel shelves are built from solid or laminated hardwood, not hollow foam or veneered particleboard. They can carry real weight like books, candles and seasonal decorations without sagging over time.

Many Houston homes from the 1970s through the 2000s have factory-built fireplaces with metal fireboxes, and their clearances come from the manufacturer's manual, which is sometimes missing. We look for the data plate inside the firebox to identify the model. Older 1950s and 1960s masonry fireplaces may have settled with the slab, leaving uneven hearths and faces that require careful scribing. Fireplaces on exterior walls see temperature and humidity swings, so we finish mantels on all sides. Many Houston fireplaces are used only a few times a year, but clearances still apply every time the fireplace is lit.
Houston humidity is the main thing we design around. Solid wood moves with the seasons, so we use furniture-grade plywood for cabinet boxes and shelves, and frame-and-panel doors that let panels float. Sink bases get extra finish protection, and in neighborhoods along bayous or in flood-prone zones we can raise toe kicks or use moisture-resistant materials on the lowest components. Keeping the house conditioned during installation helps everything settle in properly.
As a general planning range, a custom mantel shelf or simple surround in Greater Houston often lands around $1,500 to $4,500, while a full paneled overmantel with flanking built-ins can run $8,000 to $20,000 or more. Masonry, tile or electrical work adds to that. These are planning figures that vary by size and materials, so ask us for a written estimate.
