A custom fireplace surround and mantel gives a Humble living room its focal point. Ace Kustoms builds and installs them throughout Harris County.
Humble is northeast of Houston along US 59, near Bush Intercontinental Airport and Lake Houston. The original town grew around an early oil field, and the surrounding area now includes large planned communities such as Atascocita and Kingwood. The San Jacinto River and its creeks run nearby.
The old part of Humble has modest older homes, while the surrounding area is dominated by suburban subdivisions from the 1970s to today. Many homes have builder cabinets due for replacement, and some neighborhoods near the river have flood history. Kitchen upgrades, game room media walls and raised-base laundry and garage cabinets are common requests.
Newer homes in Humble typically have factory-built gas fireplaces framed in drywall with a basic mantel. Homeowners ask us to add a proper surround, an overmantel to the ceiling or flanking cabinets. We work from the manufacturer's clearance specifications so the new woodwork fits safely around the unit, and we plan TV and wiring locations at the same time to avoid surprises.
Every project starts with an in-home measurement in Humble. We build in our Houston shop and the same crew handles installation, so the person you talk to at the estimate is accountable for the result. Learn more about our full custom fireplace surrounds & mantels service.
We check the fireplace type, verify required distances to combustible materials and design the mantel height and trim depth to meet them. That avoids the costly mistake of a beautiful mantel that has to come down.
Mantel height, shelf depth and surround width are set to the scale of the wall and ceiling. An 8-foot ranch living room needs a different mantel than a two-story family room with a 20-foot wall.
In many cases a new wood surround can be built over an existing brick or tile face, with non-combustible material kept around the opening. That updates the look without tearing out masonry.
We can build an overmantel panel with blocking for a TV mount, a recessed niche for a frame-style TV, or a picture light for art. Wiring routes are planned behind the panel.

Many Houston homes from the 1970s through the 2000s have factory-built fireplaces with metal fireboxes, and their clearances come from the manufacturer's manual, which is sometimes missing. We look for the data plate inside the firebox to identify the model. Older 1950s and 1960s masonry fireplaces may have settled with the slab, leaving uneven hearths and faces that require careful scribing. Fireplaces on exterior walls see temperature and humidity swings, so we finish mantels on all sides. Many Houston fireplaces are used only a few times a year, but clearances still apply every time the fireplace is lit.
Houston humidity is the main thing we design around. Solid wood moves with the seasons, so we use furniture-grade plywood for cabinet boxes and shelves, and frame-and-panel doors that let panels float. Sink bases get extra finish protection, and in neighborhoods along bayous or in flood-prone zones we can raise toe kicks or use moisture-resistant materials on the lowest components. Keeping the house conditioned during installation helps everything settle in properly.
As a general planning range, a custom mantel shelf or simple surround in Greater Houston often lands around $1,500 to $4,500, while a full paneled overmantel with flanking built-ins can run $8,000 to $20,000 or more. Masonry, tile or electrical work adds to that. These are planning figures that vary by size and materials, so ask us for a written estimate.
