Houston Kitchen Remodel Holiday Timeline

Completed kitchen remodel with white cabinets and an island

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. Christmas is Friday, December 25. If you are reading this in the last week of October and searching for a Houston kitchen remodel timeline, you are really asking one question: can this kitchen be finished before the people arrive, or am I about to tear out the room I need most?

The useful answer is specific. A full custom kitchen started from a blank conversation this week will not be done for Thanksgiving. Christmas is possible only for a tight, same-layout project, and even then the countertop step after the cabinets are set often pushes a usable kitchen into January. The plan that protects both the holiday and the work is to design and build now, keep cooking where you cook today, and install after New Year's.

This guide is for homeowners in Houston and the rest of Harris County who want a straight kitchen remodel before the holidays, not a pep talk. It uses the sequence we actually run: measure, design, shop build, install, then template the counters off the installed cabinets.

Start With the Date, Then the Scope

Pick the date the kitchen has to work, and be honest about what "work" means. Hosting Thanksgiving is not the same as having new doors on order. A finished kitchen means you can wash dishes, cook a meal and put food away. That requires cabinets installed, counters on, the sink connected and the range usable. Paint touch-ups and a missing backsplash tile can wait. A missing sink cannot.

Write down which of these is actually your deadline:

  • Thanksgiving dinner in this house
  • Christmas or New Year's hosting
  • A kitchen you want done in January or February, with the holidays spent in the kitchen you already have
  • A smaller upgrade guests will see, such as a guest bath, while the kitchen waits

Those are four different projects. Mixing them up is how a kitchen gets torn out on the week you needed it.

What the Houston Kitchen Remodel Timeline Includes

A Houston kitchen remodel timeline is longer than the days a crew is in the house. On our kitchen projects, a common range is about six to ten weeks from a signed design to the final walkthrough. Inside that range, design and approvals often take one to three weeks, shop fabrication three to five weeks, and installation usually one to two weeks. Those are ranges, not a promise for every house. The written estimate is the schedule that counts.

The phases stack in this order:

Phase What happens Typical duration
Measure and design In-home visit, layout, door style, wood and finish 1 to 3 weeks
Shop fabrication Boxes, doors and drawers built in our Houston shop 3 to 5 weeks
Installation Old cabinets out, new ones set, scribed and fastened Usually 1 to 2 weeks
Countertops Templated after the base cabinets are installed Often 1 to 3 weeks after the template, depending on material and the fabricator

Two details change the math more than the calendar does. Fabrication happens at the shop, so the kitchen you have can stay in use while boxes are built. Demolition is scheduled close to the install, which is the point of the custom cabinet design and installation process. And countertops are templated after the cabinets are set, not from a drawing. Stone or quartz usually follows within one to three weeks of that template, depending on the material and the fabricator. A "done" date that skips this step is a cabinet-delivery date, not a kitchen you can cook in. The cabinet installation timeline for Magnolia homes walks through the same stages in one of the counties we serve.

Four Weeks Until Thanksgiving

From October 28 to November 26 is 29 days. That is enough time to make decisions. It is not enough time to design, build, install and top a custom kitchen.

What still belongs before Thanksgiving is the measure, a list of what fails (sink base, dead corner, pantry, a fridge that sticks out), appliance model numbers, and a layout that either keeps the sink and range or admits that moving them is a bigger job. Sketch the temporary kitchen on paper even if you will not need it until January.

What does not belong is demolition. If guests are coming, leave the cooktop, the sink and the refrigerator where they are.

Waiting a few more weeks will not heal a failing box. Houston does not give particleboard a dry winter to shrink back into shape. Swollen sink bases and sagging shelves are a replacement problem, covered in when Houston kitchen cabinets need replacement. Knowing that in October lets you approve a January install instead of discovering it the week you hoped to demo.

Eight Weeks Until Christmas

December 25 is 58 days from October 28, about eight weeks. That sits inside the six-to-ten-week range only if the design is signed in the first week or two, the sink and appliances stay put, no wall comes out, and the door, finish and countertop are chosen from samples you have seen. Miss one of those and Christmas becomes the middle of the job, not the end of it.

A lot of Houston houses sit on a slab. Keeping the sink where it is, is a cabinet project. Moving it means cutting concrete, running a new drain and bringing in a plumber. That scope does not get faster because a holiday is on the calendar. A wall between the kitchen and the living room is the same kind of change. Plan it as part of a kitchen remodel, not as a December add-on.

A paint finish has more shop steps than a clear finish on the same wood. Ask whether the door you want changes the install week, and get that answer in the estimate. Thanksgiving week and Christmas week are also poor places to hide float. Homeowners are hosting, and many stone shops run short crews. We will tell you which days our crew is out. Ask the countertop fabricator the same question before you treat December 23 as an install day.

Keep the Kitchen You Have Through New Year's

The calm version of a kitchen remodel before the holidays is to leave the room alone while people are in it. Custom cabinets in Houston can be built at the shop during those weeks. You approve drawings, we cut and assemble, and you host in the kitchen you have. In January the old boxes come out. The stretch without a sink is the install plus the countertop lead, not the whole project.

That only works if the design is actually approved. Once a face frame is cut, a late change to the refrigerator opening or the sink base is a rebuild, and a rebuild is how January slips into March. If you are still choosing a shop, how to vet a custom cabinet maker in Houston is the list we would want you to use on us.

Decisions to Lock Before Any Wood Is Cut

These choices move a date. Make them before fabrication.

A 36-inch range and a 30-inch range are not a trim change. A panel-ready refrigerator needs a specific opening, a matching panel and a hinge side. If the appliance is not on site, the spec sheet has to be. The sink model changes the base cabinet and the countertop cutout, and the faucet hole count has to be known before the template, not during it.

New doors on the same footprint are a cabinet replacement. A bigger island, a relocated range, or a pantry where a closet is now, is a remodel. If you want the island, say so in October and aim the install at January. If you want new custom kitchen cabinets in the kitchen you already have, do not let a mood board talk you into moving plumbing in the last week of design.

Townhomes and upstairs kitchens add a delivery problem a floor plan will not show. We measure the turns, the stair width and the landing. A tall pantry that will not turn the corner has to be built in parts or redesigned. Look at the door sample in the kitchen, morning and evening. A color approved only under shop lights is a change order after the first boxes are finished.

Smaller Projects That Can Still Finish Before Guests

If the goal is a house that feels ready when people stay over, the kitchen is not the only lever.

A custom bathroom vanity in the guest bath does not take the stove offline. It is still a measured, shop-built piece, so it needs its own schedule. Do not promise a new vanity for Thanksgiving weekend unless that work is already underway. Do ask this week whether the guest bath can be measured while the kitchen design is in progress.

A butler's pantry or pantry cabinet holds the platters and small appliances that take over a counter in December. If it sits outside the sink-and-range run, the kitchen can stay usable. If it means taking the sink wall apart, it belongs with the January kitchen.

Countertops on boxes that are staying put only make sense when those boxes are solid, dry and in a layout you want to keep. A new stone top on a swollen sink base is money spent twice. None of these smaller jobs are a way to sneak a full kitchen in before November 26.

A January Install You Can Start This Week

Late October is a good time to start a kitchen you want in early 2027.

  1. This week or next. In-home measure. Walk through a Tuesday night and a holiday meal. Note reach, where the trash goes, and which appliance is non-negotiable.
  2. Before Thanksgiving. Choose the door, wood, finish, pulls, sink and appliances. Approve the drawing. Turn leftover wishes into a yes or a no.
  3. December. Shop fabrication while you use the old kitchen. Confirm the countertop material. Plan the temporary setup: refrigerator, microwave and coffee in the dining room or garage, dishes at the laundry sink for the install window.
  4. January. Demolition close to the install. Cabinets set, scribed and fastened. Counters templated off the installed boxes, then fabricated and set. Backsplash, trim and the walkthrough follow.

Older houses inside the Loop are rarely square, so scribing fillers is part of the install, not a step to skip for a prettier date. A tight townhome stair adds time at delivery. Say both out loud at the measure so they are on the schedule.

What Belongs in the Written Schedule

A finish date with no phases behind it is a slogan. The estimate should name the day the design has to be approved for the shop to start, what happens if an appliance spec changes after that day, the week of installation, and which days the kitchen cannot be used. It should say who templates the counters, and that the template happens after the cabinets are set. It should list which holidays the crew and the countertop shop are out, and which items are separate trades: plumbing moves, electrical, slab cuts, tile.

If you are still deciding whether the boxes you have are worth keeping, settle that before you sign a holiday rush. Repair, a new finish, and full replacement are different jobs. We would rather give you the January date now than invent a November one.

When you are ready, request a free in-home estimate. We measure the kitchen you have, talk through what has to wait until after Thanksgiving, and send a written schedule. You can also call (281) 660-3903 Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. Bring appliance specs if you have them. If you do not, bring the problems. The timeline gets honest as soon as the scope does.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Houston kitchen remodel finish before Thanksgiving if I start in late October?
Not a full custom kitchen. Thanksgiving 2026 is November 26, about four weeks from October 28. Design, shop fabrication, installation and countertop templating do not all fit in that window if you are starting from a first conversation. Use the time to measure, choose materials and approve a layout. Leave the existing kitchen in place for the holiday.
Is a kitchen remodel before Christmas realistic with custom cabinets?
Only for a narrow scope, and only if the design is signed immediately and the sink, appliances and walls stay where they are. Many of our kitchens run about six to ten weeks from a signed design to the walkthrough, and stone counters are templated after the cabinets are installed. A date that lands on Christmas week is fragile. A January install is the calmer plan.
Can cabinets be built while I still cook in the old kitchen?
Yes. We build boxes, doors and drawers in our Houston shop. Demolition is scheduled close to the installation date, so the weeks of fabrication do not have to be weeks without a kitchen. The unusable stretch is the install itself, plus the time until the new counters are set.
What smaller cabinet projects can still be done before holiday guests?
A guest-bath vanity, a pantry or butler cabinet that leaves the cooktop and sink in use, and a single built-in outside the kitchen are more realistic than a full gut. Ask for a written schedule for that specific piece. Do not assume a small project can be squeezed in the week of Thanksgiving.
When should I start if I want the kitchen done in early 2027?
Start the in-home measure now, in late October or early November. Approve the layout and appliance specs before the shop cuts wood, let fabrication run through December, and schedule demolition and installation for January. You host the holidays in the kitchen you have, and you are cooking in the new one before spring.
